about sweetgeorgia

Felicia Lo, aka sweetgeorgia, is a designer, content creator, and serial entrepreneur based in Vancouver, British Columbia. With an educational background spanning pharmaceutical science, communication design, photography and textile arts, she has dedicated her time and efforts over the past decade to developing multiple, diverse businesses.

As a child, she designed and produced her first fuschia skirt (mmm, yes, polyester with an elasticized waistband) and broke her mom’s sewing machine in the process. With no sewing machine around, she quickly moved onto knitting, had a crush on Kaffe Fassett, and knit a couple acrylic sweaters. The sewing machine was replaced and at age 16, she opened a tiny dressmaking business as a summer project.

When a Chinese fortune teller gave her the vague and unhelpful advice that she would always have two jobs, she took it to task and started a graphic design firm, PlanetFish Design, while also studying Pharmacy at the University of British Columbia. After working part-time as a community pharmacist for three years, she left the industry altogether to focus on design.

Strange as it may sound, graphic designers need a creative outlet, and so Felicia learned to dye and spin yarn in luscious, vibrant colours. In September 2005, she opened SweetGeorgia Yarns, a little yarn company that produces unique handpainted, handdyed and handspun yarns for knitting and fibres for spinning.

In 2008, she developed a collection of naturally dyed yarns and fibres from organic, sustainable and renewable sources under the name Supernatural SweetGeorgia. A portion of profits from this collection is directed to 1% For The Planet, an alliance of businesses committed to leveraging their resources to create a healthier planet. Members donate at least 1% of their annual net revenues to environmental organizations worldwide.

Felicia is currently a Professional Member of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada and a member of the Greater Vancouver Weavers & Spinners Guild.
